What do you need to turn down, so you can say "Hell Yeah!" to what truly matters?
I've been asking myself this question a lot lately.
The "Hell Yeah or No" rule by Derek Sivers is about making decisions based on what truly excites you.
If something doesn't trigger a resounding "Hell Yeah!" response, then it's a definite "No."
Itâs been a game-changer for me.
Especially because most of my decisions have been somewhere in between.
Applying this simple yet efficient rule helped me declutter my life from things that are just mediocre.
It's about prioritizing your time and energy for activities and opportunities that align with your passions and goals, rather than settling for the average.
This rule easily eliminates the things which you would be doing but actually shouldnât be doing.
I was struggling for about a year and didnât really know which step to take in my professional career.
There were just so many possibilities.
The main challenge was whether I should continue my career in sales or not.
I spent a lot of time thinking about the right decision. It was draining a lot of my mental energy.
At some point, I simply asked myself whether I wanted to spend more time working on my career as a salesman.
In the past I looked at different factors such as enjoyment, salary, challenges, development and so on.
I never came to an answer. Instead I ended up in analysis paralysis.
But now I just asked myself a very simple question: Was it a âHell Yeah!â, or a resounding âNo Thank Youâ?
Immediately, I knew that this wasnât a âHell Yeah!â.
There are many aspects I really love about my current career, but also a couple of things which don't fit.
Saying âNoâ opens the door for other things you really want to say âYesâ to.
Whether itâs in your business or in your private life, it helps you to get quickly to a decision.
âShall I start my newsletter?â
âShall I create my own landing page?â
âShall I move town?â
By postponing decisions you block yourself from the things which matter to you.
5 Lessons I learned from the "Hell Yeah or No" Rule
1. The Power of Clarity
"Hell Yeah or No" emphasizes the importance of clarity in decision-making.
When faced with choices, especially regarding opportunities and commitments, this approach simplifies complex questions.
If something doesn't resonate as a "Hell Yeah," it's likely a "No."
You can avoid spreading yourself too thin and instead invest your energy in pursuits that genuinely excite you.
2. The Courage to Embrace Authenticity
"Hell Yeah or No" is more than just decision-making. It's also a call to live authentically.
Have the courage to own your quirks, passions, and dreams, even if they don't fit the mold.
Thatâs what makes you unique.
It takes guts to be yourself in a world pushing conformity.
Just because others expect something from you doesnât mean that you have to comply with it. Life's too short to play pretend.
3. Embracing the Art of Saying "No"
Saying "No" is often challenging, particularly for those who aim to please others or fear missing out on opportunities.
However, saying "No" is more of a liberating act rather than a negative one.
By declining commitments that don't align with your priorities, you create space for meaningful tasks and experiences.
Learning to say "No" empowers you to protect your time, energy, and focus.
It helps you to be more aligned with your goals and leads you to a more fulfilling and purposeful life.
4. Action Over Perfection
Embrace imperfection and take imperfect action.
Waiting for the perfect moment or conditions leads to inaction and missed opportunities.
Adopt a bias towards action, even if it means making mistakes along the way. Learn and grow.
5. Embracing the Beauty of Simplicity
Let's face it, life's already complicated. "Hell Yeah or No" keeps it simple. By saying "No" to the noise, you create space for what lights us up.
It helps you to cut out commitments that drain your energy.
You donât need to consider one million variables to finally decide where you want to go.
Takeaway
If you're unsure what to say 'Hell Yeah!' to, eliminate what's not a definite fit.
You make space for other things to develop.
It's about quality over quantity, depth over breadth.
Keep learning, keep growing, and remember, every "Hell Yeah!" brings you closer to your goals.
Hell yeah!
